| Disease | TEN CASES OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS WERE TREATED WITH TABLETS CONTAINING 20 MG OF THE EXTRACT-TWO TABLETS 3 TIMES DAILY FOR 3 WEEKS. THE POSITIVE CONTROL GROUPS WERE TREATED WITH DEXAMETHASONE (11 CASES) AT 20 MG/KG BY IV INFUSION OR ACTH (7 CASES) AT 50 UNITS IM TWICE DAILY. THESE TWO DRUGS WERE REPLACED AFTER TWO WEEKS WITH PREDNISOLONE WHICH WAS WITHDRAWN GRADUALLY. THE NEGATIVE CONTROL GROUP WAS TREATED WITH VITAMINS B AND C. IN THE TREATMENT GROUP, 8 CASES WERE CLINICALLY REMITTED AND 2 SLIGHTLY REMITTED. MILD DIARRHEA WAS REPORTED IN 2 CASES. IN THE DEXAMETHASONE GROUP 9 CASES WERE REMITTED, ONE SHOWING NO RESPONSE, AND ONE CASE DETERIORATED (REMITTED AFTER TREATMENT WITH THE EXTRACT). IN THE ACTH GROUP, 4 CASES WERE REMITTED, ONE CASE SHOWED NO RESPONSE AND ONE CASE DETERIORATED. IN THE VITAMIN GROUP NONE SHOWED ANY IMPROVEMENT. LEVELS OF CIRCULATING IMMUNE COMPLEXES, SYNTHESIS OF CNS-IG AND TITER OF MYELIN BASIC PROTEIN ANTIBODY WERE DECREASED IN THE TREATMENT AND THE 2 POSITIVE CONTROL GROUPS. C-3, HOWEVER, WAS SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED ONLY IN THE TREATMENT GROUP. THE EXTRACT WAS CONCLUDED EFFECTIVE FOR MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS AND SUPPRESSING IMMUNITY. |
