| Disease | CUTTINGS OF THE DRIED ROOT WOOD ARE FIRST EXTRACTED WITH WATER, THEN WITH CHLOROFORM AND FINALLY THE "MULTIGLYCOSIDE" MIXTURE (GTW) IS SEPARATED BY COLUMN CHROMATOGRAPHY. TWENTY-FIVE GM OF THE ROOT WOOD PRODUCES 1 MG OF THE MIXTURE OF "TOTAL GLYCOSIDES". IT IS CLAIMED THAT THIS GTW CONTAINS PRACTICALLY NO DITERPENES, MINUTE AMOUNTS OF ALKALOIDS AND SOME PENTACYCLIC TRITERPENES. AS THE DITERPENES, AND TO A LESSER EXTENT THE ALKALOIDS, ARE CONSIDERED TO BE THE MAIN TOXIC SUBSTANCES IN THE PLANT, GTW IS CLAIMED TO BE LESS TOXIC THAN THE CRUDE EXTRACT. THE QUALITY OF THE DRUG IS CONTROLLED BY TLC AND BIOASSAY. THE DRUG IS APPROVED BY THE JIANGSU PROVINCIAL DRUG REGULATORY AGENCY AND IS NOW PRODUCED AS TABLETS, EACH CONTAINING 10 MG OF THE EXTRACT. THE RECOMMENDED DOSE IS 1-1.5 MG/KG DAY. |
